Divjaka-Karavasta National Park: A Day Trip from Lushnje
If you only have time for one nature trip in central Albania, make it Divjaka-Karavasta National Park. Here a huge coastal lagoon, shady pine forest, sand dunes and the Adriatic Sea all meet, and the reed beds shelter one of Europe's rarest birds, the Dalmatian pelican. The park is a short drive from Lushnje, which makes it an easy day trip by taxi. This guide covers what makes the park special, when to go, and how to plan a relaxed day from Lushnje.
About the park
Divjaka-Karavasta was designated a national park in October 2007 and covers around 222 square kilometres of the Myzeqe plain. It stretches along the coast between the mouths of the Shkumbin and Seman rivers and protects a mosaic of habitats: wetlands, salt marshes, coastal meadows, reed beds, forest and estuaries.
At its heart is Karavasta Lagoon, around 4,380 hectares and one of the largest lagoons in the Mediterranean. The lagoon is listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and is recognised as an Important Bird Area.
The Dalmatian pelicans
The park is home to roughly 5% of the world's Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus), a globally threatened species with its shaggy crest and huge wingspan. According to the park's records, Karavasta is the only coastal breeding site for this bird along the Adriatic and Ionian seas. In total, around 228 bird species have been recorded here.
When to see them
- April to May and September to October are the best months for migrating birds, and the weather is pleasant.
- Early morning and late afternoon are when birds are most active.
- A wooden observation tower overlooks the reed beds and open water, perfect for photos.
Bring binoculars and keep your distance from nesting colonies. Pelicans are very sensitive to disturbance.
Pine forest and Divjaka beach
The park's woodland is dominated by Aleppo pine and stone pine, mixed with juniper, willow, oak, alder, elm and ash. A sandy barrier about 15 km long separates the lagoon from the sea. The pines along it were planted in the 1960s to protect the coast from erosion and now provide the shade Divjaka beach is known for.
That means you can combine a forest walk, a lagoon visit and a swim in one day without much travelling around.
Getting there from Lushnje
The distance depends on which part of the park you are heading to. Wikipedia puts the park about 30 km from Lushnje, while Albania's National Tourism Agency gives about 40 km. Driving to Divjaka town takes you roughly 20 km, and reaching the coast usually takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic and your exact destination.
Using a taxi from Lushnje has clear advantages:

A sample day
- Leave Lushnje early, around 7 to 8 am if you want to see birds.
- Spend an hour or two at the observation tower and around the lagoon.
- Walk in the pine forest, then have lunch at a local restaurant (ask about the fish of the day).
- Relax on the beach in the afternoon, especially in summer.
- Head back to Lushnje before dark, or continue to Ardenica Monastery, whose hilltop views look out over the lagoon.
Visiting with children
The park is great for families. Kids can spot birds from the tower, play in the shade of the pines and swim in the sea in summer. Summer days get hot, so plan breaks in the shade.
